After years of close collaboration, we explore the shared design ambition and uplifting energy that define our partnership.
Our partnership with Olson Kundig, the global design practice, is rooted in a shared belief: that extraordinary homes are possible when architects, builders, and clients work in true collaboration.
In our recent conversation, Architect and Owner Kevin Kudo-King highlights how this alignment comes to life on our projects together - most notably at Mountain House, where bold ideas, advanced building technologies, and a deep respect for materiality are shaping every decision.
A Collaboration Built on Trust, Curiosity, and Design Ambition
Kevin describes us as truly collaborative builders: “Carbon will work closely with the client and with the architect. That’s the cornerstone of how we work together,” he says. He also emphasizes our Founder and CEO Sam Fertik’s genuine interest in design and architecture - and the value of a builder who not only embraces innovation but actively seeks it. “That’s not something all builders do,” he notes.
This shared curiosity drives the kind of craftsmanship and technical clarity that both teams care deeply about.
Big-Picture Vision, Detail-Driven Execution
What sets Carbon apart, Kevin explains, is the ability to move effortlessly between the big-picture architectural vision and the finely tuned technical detail required to execute it. “At Olson Kundig, we’re all about craft and materiality, about how every little piece fits together - and Sam is too. It’s that level of care, that willingness to go the extra step, that shows a real commitment to the project.”
This alignment creates a seamless working rhythm, one where structural ambition and architectural refinement can coexist without compromise.
Exploring the Materials Shaping the Mountain House
That shared commitment extends far beyond drawings and models. On site at Mountain House, Olson Kundig Architectural Designer Bradley Miller joined Sam and the Carbon team to explore a range of resinous gravels and aggregates - studying how different materials, colours, and finishes might interact with light, landscape, and the home’s sculptural concrete forms.
It’s a hands-on, iterative process that ensures every element feels intentional and connected to place - and exemplifies the bespoke mockup testing that we consider integral to every Carbon build.
Collaboration, Craft - and a few Laughs Along the Way
While precision and performance drive our work, Kevin also made a point to call out something just as important: this partnership is fun!
As all of our trusted partners know, our upbeat team spirit and Sam’s sense of humour are all part of the package. And working with the team at Olson Kundig brings a level of creativity, momentum, and shared ambition that elevates every project we take on together.
If you’re looking to collaborate with a builder who values design, innovation, and true partnership, we’d be delighted to explore what we can create together. Please do get in touch.
