What impacts the cost of building a custom home? Founder and CEO Sam Fertik explains all
Of course, every build we undertake is a completely unique project, but there are a few underlying principles that guide how we cost up a Carbon Home.
Here, our founder and CEO, Sam Fertik, discusses the difference between buying or building a home, the importance of getting the right team together from ground zero and the Carbon obsession with quality from the inside out.
“Craft something with intentionality and get what you want.”
[00:00 “It’s not cheaper…” - 00:53 “...important to you”]
When you’re making one of the largest investments in your life, why settle for a house that you have only had the most cursory of looks at? If you want complete control over every aspect of your home, then building might be a better option. Here at Carbon, we guide you through that process so you and your family get the home that you want and deserve.
“If you see a price point of under $500/sq ft, you've got nothing.”
[00:54 “The cost of building… - 01:20 “...really considered” / 01:37 “If you look…” - 01:59 “...waiting to buy something”]
Here in the Northeast, the cost of building a home starts at $500-$600/sq ft, but that will only get you the home - not the land, soft costs or any extra development. We know there are other organisations out there advertising a new home build for under $500/sq ft, but that simply doesn’t make sense. So be aware: at that price point, our experience tells us that you will end up spending more.
“The cost all relates to the design.”
[01:59 “the cost all relates to…” - 02:29 “...at the same time”]
We believe in bringing the full team together from day one - aligning design, cost, and schedule from the outset. When everyone is on the same page early, we can approach the process with true intentionality and provide clear, accurate insight into project costs, all of which stem directly from the design.
“Quality comes first.”
[02:47 “From a cost perspective…” - 03:55 “...obsessively better built”]
This is such an important cornerstone of our approach; quality comes first. Budgets and schedules can be worked on, but it’s so important to make smart decisions to ensure that when you’re living in your home, everything you see and touch and feel is quality. That’s the thing you can’t change five, ten or fifteen years down the line, and that’s why our homes are Obsessively Better Built.
