This month, Carbon makes its debut in Connecticut Cottages & Gardens Magazine - and Sam doesn’t hold back.
Few publications celebrate local residential design quite like Connecticut Cottages & Gardens, which is why we’re especially pleased to see Carbon included in the magazine’s March 2026 “Meet the Builder” feature.
In the interview, Founder and CEO Sam Fertik discusses the philosophy behind Carbon, the urgency of rethinking how we build today, and offers a typically unconventional take on how he’d approach a White House Ballroom redesign.
“We can land rockets on the moon,” Sam says, “but we’re still building homes the way they did in George Washington’s time.”
It’s a characteristically direct observation, and one that sets the tone for the conversation. The feature explores Carbon’s move beyond traditional wood framing toward insulated concrete forms (ICF), steel structures, and advanced energy systems designed for longevity and resilience.
As Sam explains, the aim is “uncompromising design, cutting-edge building techniques, insulated concrete forms, steel framing, state-of-the-art energy systems, structures that don’t rot or mold, they’re wind and fire resistant, require less maintenance. They are modern, beautiful, simple, finished, structural, healthy, energy efficient, all wrapped into one.”
The article also highlights Carbon Home Zero, Sam’s own residence in Pound Ridge, a project that brought many of these principles together for the first time and continues to shape Carbon’s approach today.
